A Simple Question That Can Change Everything

What if the answer to rising fuel costs, increasing waste, and environmental pollution is already present in our kitchens? This question has guided my work for over three decades. I am Dr. A. Sajidas, an international biogas consultant and the Founder & Managing Director of BIOTECH INDIA Renewable Energy. With 32 years of experience in organic waste management, I have learned that waste is not a burden—it is a valuable resource waiting to be transformed.

The Message Behind Zero Waste

As we observe the International Day of Zero Waste, it is important to rethink how we handle the waste we generate daily. Across homes, institutions, and commercial establishments, organic waste is produced in large quantities. Unfortunately, much of it is still dumped in landfills or open spaces, causing methane emissions, foul odors, and environmental pollution.





At the same time, dependence on LPG is increasing, bringing challenges such as rising costs and supply uncertainties. These two issues—waste management and fuel dependency—can be addressed together through one effective solution: biogas technology.

Biogas: Converting Waste into Value

Biogas plants function through Anaerobic Digestion, where microorganisms break down organic waste in the absence of oxygen. This natural process converts kitchen waste—such as vegetable peels and leftover food—into clean cooking gas and nutrient-rich organic manure. 

This transformation is powerful. What was once discarded becomes a reliable source of energy and a valuable input for agriculture. It is a perfect example of turning waste into wealth.

Reducing LPG Dependence Through Biogas

From my experience, one of the biggest advantages of biogas systems is their ability to provide a decentralized and dependable source of cooking fuel. Households and institutions can produce their own gas using daily waste, reducing their reliance on LPG.



In times of fuel shortages or rising prices, biogas offers stability and energy security. It empowers people to become self-reliant, ensuring that their cooking needs are met without depending entirely on external sources.

Environmental Benefits and Climate Impact

Biogas plants play a crucial role in protecting the environment. Organic waste dumped in landfills releases methane directly into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. By capturing and utilizing this methane, biogas systems significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

Additionally, the organic slurry produced improves soil health and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. This supports sustainable agriculture and protects water resources from contamination. These efforts align with global sustainability goals promoted by the United Nations.

Biogas and the Circular Economy

Biogas technology is a perfect example of a circular economy in action. Instead of following a “use and dispose” model, it creates a closed-loop system: 

Waste is converted into energy 

By-products are used as fertilizer 

Resources are continuously reused 

This approach minimizes waste, maximizes efficiency, and creates long-term sustainability.

Applications Across Sectors

Biogas is not limited to households. Its applications extend across multiple sectors:

 Households: Convert kitchen waste into daily cooking fuel.

Hotels and Restaurants: Manage food waste while reducing fuel costs.

Institutions: Schools, hostels, and hospitals can handle large waste volumes efficiently. 

Agriculture: Utilize organic waste for energy and manure. 

This versatility makes biogas a scalable solution suitable for both urban and rural environments.

My Journey with BIOTECH INDIA
